Fanta-onomastica. Scorribande onomastiche nella letteratura fantastica del Novecento

The volume investigates the use and the treatment of the onomastics within the Fantastic literature in the twentieth century. The analysis identifies themes, situations, figures that range from the problematisation of the psychic unity of the individual (double; mad scientists) to representative figures of the unknowable otherwise (mermaids; ghosts). The extensive sampling of texts from many and often distant cultural and geographical areas offers various forms of onomastics classification. The effects of the fantastic are present in the choice of the names of the characters, ranging from common and widespread names, without forgetting the hypocoristic, to common names but with evocative power; to these the talking names, the names of the ancient tradition or evocative of distant worlds, the names of invention, the metaphorical shift from the proper name to the common name are added. Finally, with arrogance, the concealment of the name appears: a silence full of meanings indicates the impossibility of naming the unmentionable and so the concealment of the name becomes the emblem of the desire to silence a message ‘other’.

Il volume indaga l’uso e il trattamento dell’onomastica all’interno di un filone specifico della letteratura: il fantastico nel Novecento. L’analisi viene affidata all’individuazione di temi, situazioni, figure che spaziano dalla problematizzazione dell'unità psichica dell'individuo (sdoppiamenti; scienziati pazzi) a figure rappresentative dell’altrove inconoscibile (sirene; fantasmi). L’ampia campionatura di testi provenienti da numerose e spesso tra di loro distanziatissime aree culturali e geografiche disegna una mappa dell’impiego di varie forme di classificazione onomastica. Le ricadute del fantastico si avvertono infatti anche sulla scelta dei nomi dei personaggi, che vanno da nomi comuni e diffusi, senza dimenticare gli ipocoristici, a nomi comuni ma con potere evocativo; a questi si aggiungono i nomi parlanti, i nomi della tradizione antica o evocatori di mondi lontani, i nomi di invenzione, lo slittamento metaforico dal nome proprio al nome comune. Con prepotenza si affaccia infine l’occultamento del nome: un silenzio denso di significati indica l’impossibilità di nominare l’innominabile e così l’occultamento del nome si fa emblema della volontà di far tacere un messaggio ‘altro’.
