This paper reports the results of an empirical study on the victims of home burglaries. It consists in 5 in-depth interviews with people who have suffered a burglary in their homes; and a questionnaire given to 100 people who have been burgled on at least one occasion. Replies came from 51 men and 49 women between the ages of 16 and 80. Contrary to the common belief that burglary is not a serious crime, what emerges is that it affects people to the same extent as other acts of physical violence. In fact, by stealing objects that their owners are emotionally tied to, the thieves are removing part of the people themselves, their past and their dreams. And by entering the houses of the victims they commit a sort of rape, with traumatic effects particularly on women, and remove from the house its characteristic feature of being a private, safe haven, indispensible also for men. In no way do the victims feel they are treated as such, neither are they protected or comforted by the forces for law and order they turn to in order to obtain justice. Thus the anger and aggressiveness felt towards the culprits, even if expressed differently by the two sexes, is directed at strangers in general and institutions, or else it is introjected resulting in depression and frustration.
