The article, an exploration into travelling and travellers, observes how these have evolved by looking at accounts from the past, and searches for constant elements throughout various ages and societies. It takes as its starting point the assumption that it is often possible to draw on the experiences of travellers from times gone by, their ways and methods, in order to reach some often unexpected conclusions regarding the spirit of modern day travel and travellers. Travelling is a need, a necessity. Every age in life has its ways, its routes, its destinations. The traveller has become an emblematic figure of our time. Full of contradictions, constantly in search of what they cannot or do not want to find, they are standard yet unsatisfied consumers, but with almost totally globalised behaviour.

Abstract
The article, an exploration into travelling and travellers, observes how these have evolved by looking at accounts from the past, and searches for constant elements throughout various ages and societies. It takes as its starting point the assumption that it is often possible to draw on the experiences of travellers from times gone by, their ways and methods, in order to reach some often unexpected conclusions regarding the spirit of modern day travel and travellers. Travelling is a need, a necessity. Every age in life has its ways, its routes, its destinations. The traveller has become an emblematic figure of our time. Full of contradictions, constantly in search of what they cannot or do not want to find, they are standard yet unsatisfied consumers, but with almost totally globalised behaviour.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
