After the first performance ever of a classical drama in modern Europe (Oedipus Rex, at Teatro Olimpico, Vicenza, 1585), ancient drama has been revitalized in 18th century Italy by Vittorio Alfieri and others, and definitively rediscovered in 20th century: Greek tragedy in particular has been regularly performed since 1914 at the Greek theatre of Syracuse, and after the WW1 in archaeological sites and historical theatres, either in summer festivals or in regular seasons. After the WWII, and particularly since the 1960s, ancient drama has gained in popularity and impact, thanks to new interpretations and adaptations (Gassman and Pasolini are our best examples) and to other forms of entertainment, such as musicals and movies. Abstract
Nowadays, classical plays are frequently staged also in unconventional places, in schools and fringe festivals, by independent directors (Pirrotta) and by research companies such as Teatro delle Albe /Ravenna Teatro.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
