Taking their children on a journey is always a demanding undertaking for parents. As small children and adolescents get older and grow in independence, the parents’ task becomes easier. How easy it becomes, however, depends on the anxiety of the parents. In recent years operators have seen children as half clients without evaluating their specific needs, but adapting them, often on a smaller scale, to those of their parents. Those who in the past have realised the importance of treating them as privileged clients have made a fortune. We just have to think of McDonald’s and Holiday Inn, as well as many destinations such as the various Disneylands around the world, or the numerous operators and entrepreneurs who have adapted their “style” to accommodate the needs and interests of the very young. However, travelling has many other meanings for young people, to such an extent that the travelling experience can help them to become adults. In simple societies it is a journey, even a symbolic one, that marks the passage from childhood to adulthood. And it still is today. Leaving the family nest to reach a distant place alone means leaving as a child and returning as an adult in the knowledge of having succeeded in a conquest and having learnt something more about yourself.
