The paper is devoted to three illuminated Greek manuscripts disappeared from Rome in the early nineteenth century and tracked down by the author (London, British Library, Burney 19 and Burney 20; New York, The Pierpont Morgan Library, MS. M. 639). In order to identify the manuscripts, eighteenth and nineteenth century publications describing codices and their illuminations, reproduced with engraving, have been used. The smuggle out of those precious manuscripts could be related to the French people based in Rome in that period.

Abstract

The paper is devoted to three illuminated Greek manuscripts disappeared from Rome in the early nineteenth century and tracked down by the author (London, British Library, Burney 19 and Burney 20; New York, The Pierpont Morgan Library, MS. M. 639). In order to identify the manuscripts, eighteenth and nineteenth century publications describing codices and their illuminations, reproduced with engraving, have been used. The smuggle out of those precious manuscripts could be related to the French people based in Rome in that period.
