Peregrinando

In the book on slow travel, “Viaggiar lento”, edited by the author of this paper, the aim is to provide examples of a new “philosophy” in styles of travelling which seem to be the response to the frenetic style which many eternally dissatisfied travellers have in common. The paper looks at a type of travelling that has slowness as one of its principal features. A pilgrimage is a journey that should be undertaken slowly, mainly on foot , and even if modern day pilgrimages use the plane, the train or a coach, there is always a path, however short, that has to be followed on foot: the Via Crucis or the circumambulation of the holy chapel at Fatima. In this paper we apply the travelling structure suggested by Leed and describe the ritual acts and the significance of certain objects which, especially in the past, made up part of the pilgrim’s baggage.

Nel libro “Viaggiar lento” curato dall’autore del presente saggio, si vuole esemplificare una nuova “filosofia” nello stile di viaggiare che sembra la risposta alla frenesia che accomuna lo stile di molti viaggiatori perennemente insoddisfatti. Il saggio si occupa di una tipologia di viaggio che fa della lentezza uno degli elementi caratterizzanti. Il pellegrinaggio, infatti, è un percorso che va fatto lentamente, soprattutto a piedi e sebbene nei pellegrinaggi contemporanei si usi l’aereo o il treno o il pullman, c’è sempre un percorso che, pur breve, va sempre fatto a piedi: la via crucis o la circumambulazione della sacra cappellina come a Fatima. Nel saggio si applica la struttura del viaggiare proposta da Leed e si descrivono i gesti rituali e il significato di alcuni oggetti che, soprattutto nel passato, facevano parte del corredo del pellegrino.
