The artcile considers how fiction has always been used to put in the public domain facts, ideas and private dilemmas that could not easily be spoken about as 'truth'. Part of the creative process involves this transformation of the unspeakable into the publishable, because fiction not fact. The article then goes on to ask what happens to fiction as times change, taboos come down and people find there is no longer a problem of speaking directly about certain issues; they no longer have to be cloaked in fiction. How does this and will this effect the novel, particularly the literary novel.

Abstract

The artcile considers how fiction has always been used to put in the public domain facts, ideas and private dilemmas that could not easily be spoken about as 'truth'. Part of the creative process involves this transformation of the unspeakable into the publishable, because fiction not fact. The article then goes on to ask what happens to fiction as times change, taboos come down and people find there is no longer a problem of speaking directly about certain issues; they no longer have to be cloaked in fiction. How does this and will this effect the novel, particularly the literary novel.
