The article sets out a critical approach to reading based on an analysis of the dominant semantic polarity in the work, an approach based on theories of systemic psychology. The polarities considered are good/evil, fear/courage, belonging/exclusion, winning losing. With reference to various authors the article suggests that if identifying the dominant polarity in a narrative can be a good way to get to the heart of its structure and engagement with the reader, whose reaction will depend on the importance or otherwise of that polarity in his or her life.
