It is said that ghosts, perturbing events or supernatural wonders don’t mark out the fantastic, but rather the sensory, emotional, intellectual conditioning suffered by the textual figures – characters, narrator – who tell them. Starting from this principle I wish to consider a topos which recurs frequently in Dino Buzzati’s production: the topos of the ghost. This research aims to point out the evolution of the topos of the ghost through a selection of readings of representative twentieth-century Italian writers. The purpose of this investigation is to to do a sort of sampling of it in order to demonstrate the passage from a fantastic determined by its themes, a nineteenth-century heritage, to a fantastic which explores the disturbing possibilities of what is not said, not done… At the heart of the study is Dino Buzzati’s production. Buzzati dedicates a lot of stories to apparition of dead who comes back to say hello, to warn, to ask for help, to help… but they seem to be not heard because nobody believes any more in their existence.
