This book considers the possible application of theories of systemic psychology to the literary cricism. Starting with Gregory Bateson and his notions of schismogenesis it proceeds to look at positioning theories and notions of 'semantic polarities'. Following the Italian psychologist, Valeria Ugazio, it seeks to identify dominant polarities in the works of a number of authors, English and Italian, and then looks at the relations between their lives and work in the light of those polarities.
