'By the Arena ... Il Decaduto': Eliot &/in Italy

Beyond the well known critical surveys of some seventy years (since the mid-Thirties) focused on the influence of Eliot’s poetry and poetics on Italian authors—Eugenio Montale and Mario Luzi in particular—this analysis pursues two specific aims: on the one hand it summarizes the well known relationships between the three poets mentioned above, by offering also further textual evidence and critical insights; on the other hand it puts forward fresh and still unexplored relationships and analogies with Italian poets of the second half of the XX c., namely Edoardo Sanguineti, Giuseppe Conte, and Attilio Bertolucci, by establishing, through textual evidence, how these poets have drawn on Eliot’s poetry for themes and imagery which have been reshaped and transfigured in their own verses. This essay belongs to a volume which represents the first and only international study dealing with Eliot’s influence and reception in non-English speaking countries and cultural areas of the world.

Al di là delle note ricostruzioni degli ultimi settant’anni (a partire dalla metà degli Anni Trenta) sull’influenza esercitata dalla poesia e dalla poetica di T.S. Eliot sugli autori italiani, in particolare Eugenio Montale e Mario Luzi, questo saggio si indirizza verso due direzioni precise: da un lato ripercorre sinteticamente le relazioni già note tra i tre poeti sopra menzionati anche attraverso ulteriori reperimenti testuali e intuizioni critiche, dall’altro propone nuove analogie sinora inesplorate con poeti italiani delle generazioni più giovani del secondo Novecento quali Edoardo Sanguineti, Giuseppe Conte ed Attilio Bertolucci, dimostrando testi alla mano come anche costoro abbiano attinto temi ed immagini eliotiane ritrasformandole e metamorfizzandole nei proprio versi. Il volume di cui il saggio fa parte costituisce il primo studio in assoluto sull’influenza e la ricezione di T.S. Eliot in aree culturali non anglofone.
